In an effort to better understand his home’s energy performance, Harwinton First Selectman Michael Criss recently participated in the Home Energy Solutions (HES) program.
Home Energy Solutions is a convenient home energy improvement service provided by CL&P, United Illuminating and the natural gas utilities as part of the Energize Connecticut initiative. The program is designed to help people save money on their monthly energy bills.
For those who sign up, utility-authorized energy specialists come to your home or apartment and install energy-efficient products and perform weatherization services. Services include locating and professionally sealing air leaks, replacing incandescent lights with energy saving bulbs and insulating hot water pipes.
While these services are valued at an average of $1,000, the cost for the HES service is only $75 for homes heated by electricity or natural gas, $99 for homes heated with fuel oil and propane and is free for those who meet income eligibility guidelines.
Harwinton also recently re-committed to the Clean Energy Communities program, which includes more than 70 other cities and towns across the state. Under the Clean Energy Communities program, Harwinton has pledged to reduce municipal building energy consumption by 20 percent by 2018, and to voluntarily purchase 20 percent of its municipal electrical needs from renewable sources by 2018.
The town is encouraging residents who are interested in energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy conservation to join its Energy Task Force by contacting Town Hall at 860-485-9051.
